How often have you heard someone say they'd rather die than give a speech? Well, a little pre-talk anxiety is perfectly natural, what we'll help resolve here is the dry mouth, trembling hands and blank mind syndrome. We'll help you begin, because starting is half the work!

If you only remember one thing from this piece, then let it be that 'Audiences love to be entertained, they relate to storytelling', so...... present them with a STORY!

As internal organisational pressures increase, companies rely more on oral and visual presentations for communication, emphasising the importance of soft skills, whilst trying to reduce the forest of bureaucratic paper...

Fact:
A one hour illustrated talk = 50 typed pages of text
Fact:
A presentation can be twice as effective as a report
Fact:
The average listener's attention span < 20 minutes
Fact:
YOU have < 2 minutes to establish yourself with YOUR audience

... audiences are increasingly, visually sophisticated, they commonly expect presentations with rich media content and refined graphics, but it is unlikely that you are a professional producer, you don't need to be a professional actor, just act professionally and by remembering that it's a 'Show' you can turn things to your advantage and give yourself the edge you need

The Method

There's no great secret, or mystery to presentations, follow the method below (even if you think you've been there and done that), and put it to the test.

The advice is free, its confidential (we don't know who you are), and you never need to thank us, but, please recommend us to your colleagues if you want to let them into the secret, if you don't, then at least tell your friends!

Don't rush ahead, follow the suggestions as they're made. This crib list has been produced from years of distilled experience, we hope it will make your presentations a little easier.

Lastly, don't be fooled by anyone who says presenting is a natural talent, it can be learned just like anything else, read what follows to get that 'edge'...

If appropriate, direct the audience towards your preferred outcome

Anticipate questions... and the answers you will give

Presenting - you've done all the hard work, so have fun

Don't read your script directly from typed notes

Do use concisely written 'cue cards'

Gesture, vocal tone and modulation... should be EMPHASISED

Maintain eye contact

Be clear and precise in establishing your proposals

Use less formal language

Be ready to sense hostility to overused and misunderstood terminology

Do YOU know that YOU are more endearing if YOU use the word YOU

Choose emotive words carefully in conveying your ideas

Study some of the 'Great Leaders'... Martin Luther King... Bill Shankly... Jean Luc Picard

Rehearse - EVERYBODY needs to do this

--->

--->

--->

Present to close colleagues well before the event

Give them your notes to review

Review their written comments with a surgeon's scalpel

Venue Check - do it well before the big day
